“We’re almost there”, Grandma says. “Just one more crossing.”

Grete’s heart is thumping. She’s been waiting for this trip for months. It’s Grandma's birthday present to her.

No maps show the place. It has no name. Known only to their kin, it is simply called “the spot”.

This is their family tradition: when a child turns ten, they are deemed strong enough for the two-day hike to reach the patch.

And now it’s finally Grete’s turn.

They pause on top of the last hill, and Grete takes a deep breath to prepare for the reveal. In her mind, the place has taken on an almost mystical grandeur.

But a wave of disappointment washes over her. Everything looks so… normal.

It’s just another little lake surrounded by fells, with nothing out of the ordinary standing out against this landscape.

Grandma smiles.

“Look, Grete”, she says, pointing ahead. “See?”

Grete follows Grandma’s finger, and then she sees them:

Small, bright orange beads sprawling across the heathland as far as the eye can see. Like coins spilled from a purse.

Dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of them?

Grandma hands Grete a wooden bucket, her eyes twinkling.

“Remember, use both hands and count to ten.”

Grete nods solemnly, gripping the bucket.

Then they head down the slope, ready to gather their golden bounty.

This is "the spot".

Many generations have come and gone, as have Grete and her grandma long ago. But the fells, the lakes – and perhaps a few secret hideaways – are still there.
