The silver harvest of Nesseby

Inger hums a soft tune as she brushes off stray salt crystals. On this crisp morning, the sea has been particularly generous.

Their small wooden boat is heavy with the early catch as it glides silently toward the shore. Well, as silently as a boat full of fish can glide amidst an eager audience of hungry seagulls.

Nimble as a lynx, Leif climbs off the boat first as usual, while Eirik and his wife start passing him the fish one by one.

The hooks sink into the silver-skinned treasures in a routinely manner, as if in a well-rehearsed dance. It's almost poetic (if you don't inhale too deeply).

By dusk, the racks are filled with fresh cod again, standing proudly against the horizon. The fish will dry slowly in the Arctic air, becoming stockfish—a gift of the sea, preserved by the wind.
