The silver harvest of Nesseby

Inger hums a soft tune as she brushes off stray salt crystals from her linen skirt. On this crisp morning, the sea has been particularly generous to the family.

Their small wooden boat is heavy with the early catch as it glides silently toward the shore – or at least as silently as a boat full of fish can glide amidst an eager audience of hungry seagulls.

Leif climbs off the boat first as usual and as nimbly as a lynx, while Eirik and his wife start passing him the fish one by one.

Once the catch has been cleansed, the hooks sink into the silver-skinned treasures with rhythmic precision, as if in a well-rehearsed dance. 

By dusk, the racks are filled with fresh cod again, standing proudly against the horizon – now safe from the gulls, who have feasted on the scraps of the day’s labour.

The fish will dry slowly in the Arctic air, eventually becoming stockfish. It’s a gift of the sea, preserved by the wind.
