A discovery on the beach may change the outlook on your morning brew

There is a little island in the Ivalo river where my father, grandfather and his father used to stay months on end, fishing and making hay back in the early 1900’s. I, too, spent countless childhood summer days there.

It was wild how fast time flew by there, the sun never set, so you would easily stay up fishing until the wee hours. And no one would tell you to go to bed. Some may have been counting sheep, we were counting fish.

I remember pulling out large grayling with my spinning rod while the adults were huddled around the campfire playing cards (and maybe having a sip or two of some firewater, too). 

Now, looking at the landscape through adult eyes, I realise how it offers something new each season: every spring the flooding river with its massive blocks of ice shapes the shores, changing the scene ever so slightly. 

This summer, Mother Nature has done it again: the ice has pushed the pebbles into piles, and there are new small sandy patches here and there.

I wander around the pebbly shore and fill my pockets with small stones. The river has smoothed them for so long that they shine like pearls.

Inspired by their beauty, I want to create something to capture how this place always makes me feel.

The word on the side of this mug is made from those river-touched stones, to mirror their resilience and beauty. As such, it’s a reminder of the serene and carefree moments spent at that riverbank, connecting me with both the past and the present.
